The Health Benefits of Anthocyanins

by | Jun 12, 2022 | Health & Wellness

Did you know that the chemicals that give plants their bright colors can be especially good for your health? That means fruits and vegetables like blueberries, cherries, and cranberries pack an extra nutritional punch!

Anthocyanins are a group of red, purple, and blue pigments found in plants that are a part of a larger group called flavonoids that have antioxidant effects. Research suggests that flavonoids are powerful nutrients and can help explain why some plant-based diets are associated with several health benefits. Anthocyanins are commonly found in fruits and vegetables with red, purple, or blue hues. Although research is still being conducted on their role in treating and preventing certain diseases, there is strong evidence that anthocyanins provide a wide range of health benefits including:

Lowering Blood Pressure Research strongly suggests that anthocyanins may help reduce blood pressure. A study in which participants with hypertension took extracts and preparations from plants containing anthocyanins showed a consistent lowering effect on blood pressure. However, other studies showed mixed results that could be caused by factors such as dosage and type of anthocyanin, number of doses, and individual characteristics.

Reducing the Risk of Heart Disease Anthocyanins may be able to reduce the risk of heart disease by intervening at different stages of the process by reducing cholesterol, high blood pressure, and inflammation.

Preventing Neurological Diseases Studies suggest that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in anthocyanins can help protect and improve brain function. One study showed that a daily dose of cherry juice helped improve the speech and memory of people 70 and older with mild or moderate dementia. Another study found that anthocyanins increased blood flow to help activate areas that control memory, language, and attention.

Slowing Cancer Growth Anthocyanins might be able to slow cancer growth by blocking the changes in DNA that cause cancer, destroying cancer cells, and preventing tumors from becoming cancerous. However, research on cancer and anthocyanins has only occurred in the lab and there are limited studies from clinical trials.
