Classic German Lebkuchen


1 1/2 C Brown Sugar 1 C Butter 1 C Dark Brown Molasses 1 C Sour Milk or Buttermilk 1 TBL Baking Soda 1 1/2 tsp Salt 1 tsp Cinnamon 1 tsp Cloves 1 tsp Anise Seed Crushed 1/2 C Fruit Juice (we used Apple Cider) 1/2 C Graceland Fruit Dried Cherries Chopped 1 C Finely Chopped Walnuts 1/2 C Finely Cut Citrus 8 C King Arthur Flour - Sifted


Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and sour milk. Sift dry ingredients: flour, nut meats, dried cherries and citron. Add anise seed to sifted dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with fruit juice. Blend well. Add fruit and nuts. Chill dough overnight. Roll on lightly floured board to 3/8 to 1/4 thickness. Cut in desired shapes. Decorate as desired. Bake in a 350 degree oven until delicately brown about 12 minutes. Store in tight container to mellow.
